Abstract

This research discusses the Challenges of Upholding Human Rights (Case Study: Uighur Muslims 2014-2018). This research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis method. The researcher explained about cases of human rights violations that occurred to Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region from 2014 to 2018. In reviewing this study the authors used the concept of human rights, enforcement of human rights, and minority rights. In 2014 according to Human Rights Watch, the Chinese government detained one million Muslim minorities in exile camps in Xinjiang. The Chinese government carried out political indoctrination, cultural assimilation, and torture of Uighur Muslims in the camps. They were detained for no apparent reason and without legal assistance. The Chinese government also applies strict rules that prohibit and limit the religious activities of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region. The Chinese government claims to do so to reduce the entry of terrorism and separatism, whereas Uighur Muslims consider Cina's discriminatory and unfair behavior which triggers terrorism and separatism. The author sees Cina violating the law regarding human rights both in domestic rules and international rules. After reviewing and understanding cases of human rights violations in Xinjiang, the authors saw a number of challenges in efforts to uphold human rights in the Xinjiang region which caused the cases to continue for years, namely 1) the unification of the Chinese government with ethnic Uighurs 2) the social gap between Han and Uighur ethnicity 3) the influence of the Chinese economy in the world.
